Coffee Board has applied for geographical indication (GI) tag for Wayanad coffee. With this, Wayanad coffee will become the singular robusta variety from India to attract the attention of global market. Wayanad in north Kerala grows 50,000-60,000 tonnes of robusta coffee annually. The board has applied for GI status to Baba Budan Giri, Araku Valley, Coorg and Chikkamagaluru coffee too. Brahmagiri Development Society which is playing a major role in the branding of Wayanad coffee is planning to set up instant coffee unit at a cost of Rs60 crore.
