Cabin Coffee Receives State Award

Brad and Angie Barber of Cabin Coffee received the 2018 Neal Smith Entrepreneur of the Year Award Thursday during a ceremony at the State Capitol in Des Moines.

The couple founded Cabin Coffee in 2002 in Clear Lake. Over the last 15 years, the business has grown to 15 franchise locations — including one in Forest City — and a central Support Center.

The Neal Smith Award is presented annually by America’s SBDC Iowa.

The Barbers have been active in encouraging the entrepreneurial culture of North Iowa, particularly through their involvement in the Youth Entrepreneurial Academy, according to a press release from the John Pappajohn Entrepreneurial Center in Mason City,

YEA is a week-long summer entrepreneurship camp for high school students taking place on the North Iowa Area Community College campus every summer.

Brook Boehmler, regional director of the North Iowa Area SBDC, nominated Cabin Coffee for the Neal Smith Award.

“Brad and Angie put their community and customers first, and growth follows,” he stated. “We could not be more proud of this North Iowa landmark that is taking these principles nationwide.”
