Us, Hong Kong Selling Myanmar Coffee Without Permission

Retailers in the US and Hong Kong have been selling coffee produced by Genius Shan Highland Coffees, a Myanmar coffee producer, without its permission, said U Ngwe Tun, founder of the company.

“In Hong Kong and the US, people are selling coffee under our brand and packaging together with the organic certification mark but without our permission. This is product imitation and infringes on our intellectual property (IP) rights,” he said at an IP forum for Myanmar small and medium enterprises last week.

However, Myanmar has no formal IP law to protect its companies, so it has been difficult for U Ngwe Tun to take action against the imitators. “It’s difficult for us to take action. But we are trying,” he said.
