Muggswigz Coffee and Tea Co. will host a preliminary round of the U.S. Coffee Championships this weekend.
Canton is one of only 10 cities around the country hosting the Specialty Coffee Association-sponsored event.
Muggswigz, a coffee shop, roaster and wholesaler since 2003, will serve as the site for the barista competition, which involves baristas serving traditional espresso beverages to judges for review.
The competition takes place at 11 a.m. Saturday and Sunday.
Muggswigz, 137 Walnut Ave. NE, also will host its second annual “Celebrating the Craft” community event, which will include crafts and live music.
The event is free to attend for noncompetitors.
“We’ve been involved with the specialty coffee industry for so long and have always had to go out of the state or country to participate in Specialty Coffee Association competitions,” Muggswigz founder Alexander Haas said in a prepared statement. “It’s great that we can now bring an event like this to Canton and stay home.”
The Arts in Stark and Visit Canton also are helping partner on the local competition.
