Cafes Novell, the family owned coffee roaster based in Barcelona is to launch the first compostable coffee capsule in Spain, reaffirming its commitment to innovation and will see Novell creating a capsule that eliminates waste in up to 12 weeks.
The composting process lasts between 4 to 12 weeks, however depending on the efficiency of the process it can be as fast as 4 weeks in a commercial composting environment. The result is a completely composted product which will not create waste and damage to the environment. It is an innovative solution that will mitigate the environmental impact currently caused by plastic and aluminium capsules and is another step forward for Novell in the expansion of the brand globally.
The Novell compostable capsule is made from state-of-the-art bio-based materials, formed of ecovio material which is made from biodegradable plastic compostable (Ecoflex) and PLA (made from corn). Novell will officially launch the new products to the market today, 6 April 2017 at the London Coffee Festival. Initially offered in two blends of Certified Organic coffee, Intenso and Decaf, the coffee will be available to purchase at the show or online.
Phil White, Managing Director of Novell in the UK said: “The new compostable capsule won’t alter the taste, aroma or quality of the certified Organic coffee. In addition, the capsule is fully compatible with all Nespresso machines and unlike most other capsules they can be thrown into organic recycling for composting instead of the general waste, overcoming one of the major concerns in the industry now.”
Josep Novell, CEO of Novell said: “It is a clear commitment to innovation and strengthens Novell’s commitment to the environment by providing a solution to the issues surrounding capsule coffee and environmental concerns.”
