ASHLAND – With the new year off to a frigid start, now is a great time to grab a cappuccino, latte, tea or a plain old cup of joe to warm up. Located near the Lowe’s Shopping Center just outside of Ashland. Pour House Coffee is a coffee house that proves good things come in small packages. The small shop offers an assortment of hot and cold drinks as well as pastries and sandwiches. The Pour House is co-owned by Kim Klien and Tiffanie Ricewick and opened in 2014.
“We wanted to start a business together, and we looked at a number of different things,” Klien said. “We talked to a friend from the mall, and she told us that coffee houses were trendy right now. We looked into it and discovered Sunergos Coffee in Louisville. As soon as we walked into their shop we decided this is what we wanted to do.”
Klien said Sunergos Coffee has four shops in Louisville and wholesales coffee beans.
“As far as finding this building, we looked at every building in Russell, Ashland, etc., trying to find something that fit our needs. One day I was driving back home, saw this building and called my partner Tiffanie immediately. This building was originally a bank. It was also a cigarette shop and a pharmacy. I think we have been the longest tenants beside the bank.”
Customers can enjoy a latte in a variety of flavors, including Dark Chocolate, Peppermint Mocha and Pumpkin Spice. Lattes come in 12-ounce ( $3.20), 16-ounce ( $3.91), and 20-ounce ( $4.98) sizes. One of the specialties is the Cafe Miele, which has honey and cinnamon. There are also cold beverages such as the Iced Latte ( $3.96-$4.62) and coffee alternatives like Hot Chocolate ( $2.74, $3.54, $3.95) and Loose Leaf Tea ( $2.95, $3.45, $3.95).
“We get our coffee beans from Sunergos in Louisville. They actually won an award for the nation’s best espresso. They import beans from all over the world and roast them. We get them the day after they roast them,” Klien said. “Because our building is too small to have a kitchen, we have a partnership with Root-A-Baker’s Bakery in Morehead ( Kentucky). We pick up pastries from them each day. They’re most famous for their iced sugar cookies. They also provide us with chicken salad and pimiento cheese. Their chicken salad is legendary – it actually has cranberries, pineapple and pecans in it.”
The shop has a small menu of sandwiches available for lunch and dinner. You can get a Root-A-Baker’s Chicken Salad or Pimiento Cheese sandwich and chips for $7.99. There is also a BLT ( $4.99). You can also order a croissant sandwich with your choice of ham, roast beef or turkey for $5.99. Breakfast options include savory scones, sticky buns and bacon and spinach quiche.
