There’s a new pink symbol in the coffee wars of Cobb Corner.
Marylou’s Coffee opened Wednesday within Seasons Corner Market, offering its specialty iced coffees and signature pink cups for customers curious to see the company’s newest location.
“I was excited,” said Mark Biagini of Stoughton. “I kept driving by and seeing the advertising, wondering when it was finally going to be open.”
Biagini, who bought a medium iced coffee Wednesday, said the coffee was higher quality than Dunkin’ Donuts.
The new Marylou’s spot certainly has competition – you can look out the window and see a Dunkin’ Donuts across the street. There’s another Dunkin’ across the intersection into Canton, and there’s a Starbucks less than a quarter-mile away.
How will Marylou’s – armed with its “best coffee in town” slogan – fit in?
“Dunks’ in the morning, Marylou’s in the afternoon,” declared one customer. “Every day.”
Marylou’s is cheaper than Starbucks (a medium hot coffee is $1.80), and offers more iced varieties than Dunkin’ Donuts.
Mimi and Lili Ross of Sharon stopped in Wednesday to buy a couple of Twix iced coffees – a big seller, the Marylou’s employees said. So were the chocolate mint cookie and Milky Way varieties.
Dozens of iced coffee varieties line the wall behind the pink counter, everything from Hawaiian chocolate nut to blueberry cinnamon crumble to the mint-flavored Minty Lou.
The store saw a big morning rush Wednesday, employees said, and a good crowd in the late afternoon.
“It’s better than Dunkin’,” said Justin Campbell of Easton, picking up a few iced drinks on his way home. “And Starbucks is overpriced – that’s hipster coffee.”
Founder Marylou Sandry said the company received “many requests” to move into the Stoughton area.
The Cobb Corner spot marks the 41st Marylou’s location, and the first in the Stoughton/ Canton area. Previously, Marylou’s faithful had to trek down to Brockton or up to Westwood or Randolph for a caffeine fix.
Along with coffee and tea drinks, the location also offers a variety of pastries, bagels and breakfast sandwiches. It also sells coffee beans by the pound.
Marylou’s Coffee was founded in 1986 in Hanover, and has expanded to 41 locations in Massachusetts and Rhode Island. It has area locations in Brockton (one near the Easton border, one on Crescent Street), Whitman, Abington, Bridgewater and East Bridgewater.
The Cobb Corner spot is at 140 Sharon St., near the Canton and Sharon border.
