Peet’s Coffee Puts ‘Pause’ On Construction Of Plant In Suffolk

Suffolk calls itself the caffeine capital of Virginia, but the city will have to wait for its next cup of joe.

The West Coast-based Peet’s Coffee has “paused” construction on its $58 million investment of a roasting facility, a company spokeswoman confirmed in an email to The Virginian-Pilot.

Peet’s hit the pause button “to determine how best to utilize the location and the expansion for long-term success,” the spokeswoman, Elizabeth Ricardo, wrote in an email. She did not return phone calls seeking additional information.

Suffolk’s director of economic development, Kevin Hughes, said Thursday there have been no issues securing construction permits or otherwise major delays on building. He pointed instead to recent news surrounding Peet’s German parent company, JAB Holdings.
