Robin John Mountain landed at Sacramento International Airport July 19, 1999 with a permit to work in the U.S. and two suitcases at his feet, one of which carried a tool kit for his job — the artificial insemination of honey queen bees.

This July 19, on the 20th anniversary of his arrival from South Africa, Mountain will open Ntaba Coffee Haus, an African coffee shop on Louisville’s Brownsboro Road, which will also serve as a storefront to his African safari tour company.

Mountain grew up near Johannesburg, South Africa. The son of a second generation beekeeper, he jokes that he was “born in a beehive.” A white South African during apartheid, Mountain served in the military for two years and later earned a degree in animal science and animal husbandry.
