MCDONALD’S has launched a trial of barista-made coffee in a handful of its London restaurants, as the coffee boom helps to boost sales in the UK.
The chain has been expanding its coffee offer in the UK, adding the flat white to its menu earlier this year.
“Coffee drinkers are our most frequent customers and people may be surprised to know that we are second in this market,” said UK boss Paul Pomroy.
“Our barista coffee will remain true to the values of McCafe – great tasting, served quickly, simply and at an affordable price,” he added. “Barista coffee is outperforming projections, so we will soon be expanding our trial to restaurants in the East Midlands.”
The news came as the international company posted better-than-expected earnings for the second quarter. Comparable sales were up four per cent, but revenue dropped 12 per cent.
In the UK, the fast food operator recorded its 49th consecutive quarter of growth.
The introduction of a mini McFlurry outperformed expectations due to the hot summer.
Pomroy added: “As we enter the second half of the year we must stay laser focused on doing right by our customers and our people, and continuing to invest for the long term.”
