In today’s climate, even a cup of coffee can be politicized.
Some residents are calling for a Starbucks boycott after a barista, on the Fourth of July, asked a group of Tempe police officers to move or leave because a customer was uncomfortable.
Other Phoenix-area coffee shops quickly stepped up on social media to offer free or discounted coffee to officers.
Unsurprisingly, the online reaction reflects one’s individual politics.
A Gilbert shop, among those that offered free beverages to officers, found itself the target of debate for selling “Black Coffee Matters” merchandise.
“Looks like someone thought it would be a good idea to make money mocking dead black people. That’s disgusting,” commenter Peter James wrote.
