ARLINGTON, Va., Sept. 29 — Conservation International issued the following news release:
The Sustainable Coffee Challenge (SCC) today welcomed Walmart as the first major North American retailer to partner on making coffee the world’s first sustainably grown commodity. Walmart joins 83 other SCC partners, including corporations, governments, NGOs and research organizations.
The SCC aligns with Walmart’s existing sustainability commitments, which include a commitment to sustainability through cutting waste, using renewable energy and selling products that sustain resources and the environment. Most recently, in 2016, the retailer’s Chief Executive Officer Doug McMillon committed to sustainably source 20 key commodities in its stores by 2025.
“The significant consumer base and respected brand that Walmart brings will help us reaffirm the importance of coffee sustainability with each purchase,” said Bambi Semroc, Senior Strategic Advisor at Conservation International.
” Walmart is committed to working with suppliers to increase the sustainability performance of our private brand coffee products and working towards the SCC goal of making coffee a more sustainably grown commodity,” said Brittni Furrow, Senior Director for Sustainability at Walmart.
