Oct. 25– WILMINGTON — Contestants on Season 14 of Fox’s “So You Think You Can Dance” paid a visit to Bitty &Beau’s Coffee on Tuesday to do what they do best: dance.
Employees of Bitty &Beau’s, known for its mission to employ and advocate for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities, were surprised to see the cast members walk into the shop on Tuesday.
Christina Dinardo, 28, works at Bitty &Beau’s as a barista and cashier, but on Tuesday afternoon she was hanging out there on her day off.
“I was totally shocked,” Dinardo said.
At first, customers at the shop recognized the contestants and asked to take photos with the dancers, said Kelly Skinner, manager of the shop.
The attention then moved to the employees of the shop, whom the dancers wanted to meet, Skinner said.
“They took time to get to know the employees,” Skinner said. “Near the end, every single one of the cast members wanted a picture with them, calling them celebrities.”
Some of the contestants from the show said they followed the shop’s videos online, Skinner said.
The cast members ended up having a dance party with the employees, Dinardo said, which involved break dancing, a conga line and slow dancing.
The cast members spent about an hour with the employees and bought smoothies and frappuccinos.
Finalists of Season 14 of the show were in Wilmington on Tuesday to perform at the Wilson Center at Cape Fear Community College, the Star News reported.
Even though Bitty &Beau’s in Wilmington opened in January 2016, its mission has expanded beyond the city, and beyond North Carolina.
The business will open its second location in Charleston, S.C., by the end of this year and has been featured on “The Rachael Ray Show,” “Harry,” “Good Morning America” and HLN, and in People and Southern Living magazines.
“So You Think You Can Dance” is a show where dancers compete to win the title of “America’s Favorite Dancer” based on how viewers vote.
