Maryland coffee company supporting Bay health

CROFTON – Thanks to Chesapeake Bay Roasting Company, coffee lovers now have the opportunity to support the health of the Bay.

Rick and Tom Erber created CBRC during what they refer to as the “great expansion of Starbucks.”

“Starbucks brought forth the specialty coffee experience’ through their line of stores that served coffee by the cup,” said Joshua Richardson, business development manager for CBRC. “There were certainly companies that had this model before-hand, but there’s no doubt Starbucks revolutionized how people saw coffee as a whole. The industry was turning to an artisan approach to coffee; how it was sourced, roasted, and crafted into drinks.”

Richardson said the Erbers wanted to create a company that actively supported the community, all while creating a memorable cup of coffee.

The Chesapeake Bay is the largest estuary in North America, and such a significant part of what makes the state of Maryland tick. CBRC’s facilities are located in Crofton, in the heart of the watershed, and thus the Bay is their largest environmental focus.

However, the company also supports many other environmental and community causes throughout the state.

“We, as a company, ensure that the products we sell have a method of helping to preserve or renew the Bay in some shape or form,” said Richardson. “Whether that be aiding in planting oysters through the can sales that promote the Oyster Recovery Partnership, donating time and coffee to events with environmental cleanup focus, or through our H2O initiative, which donates 2 percent of the proceeds of designated coffee products to organizations that do important work in Bay cleanup. Water is the world’s most precious commodity, so as we grow as a company, our goals to expand our own cleanup programs will grow.”

Other examples of CBRC’s commitment to such causes include: partnering with the Master Gardener program in Annapolis for composting their organic production waste, donating a portion of Lighthouse can sales to the Paul’s Place outreach program in southern Baltimore, and taking their coffee truck to events such as 5k races supporting charitable causes.

Richardson said the company would love to support watershed preservation activities across the Delmarva Peninsula in 2018.
