John Weinstein was passionate about coffee before it became fashionable. The Coast Guard civil servant who lives in Western Branch recalls coffee was far from trendy in the ’80s.
“It used to be coffee was 20 cents at the diner,” he said. “It wasn’t very good coffee.”
Starbucks, which opened its first coffee shop in 1971, changed the perception of coffee, Weinstein said. It became a luxury product. He can’t pronounce some of the chain’s more exotic offerings, but he loves coffee.
