Here are seven coffee brands that are certified by Fairtrade America as being “fair trade.” But what exactly does that mean? Fair-trade coffee means that the beans are grown to climate and coffee standards set by the organization. Those standards include waste and water management protection and the safe use of agrochemicals. Farms are also not allowed to plant GMO seeds and are prohibited from cutting down trees in primary forests. The farmers are encouraged to turn to organic farming by being offered Fairtrade Premiums, which is an extra sum of money given to farmers by Fairtrade.
