New York, NY – Erin McCarthy, a member of Counter Culture Coffee’s New York team, took home the top prize and was named the World Champion Brewer at one of the world’s leading coffee competitions, the 2013 Brewers Cup Championship on May 26th. Representing the United States in this worldwide tournament, Erin competed using a Gesha-variety coffee from Hacienda Esmeralda in Panama. Serving as Erin’s coaches were Katie Carguilo of Counter Culture Coffee—who was the 2012 U.S. Barista Champion—and Sam Penix of Everyman Espresso in NYC.
The event is one of the highest acclaimed coffee competitions in the world and was part of the Melbourne International Coffee Expo (MICE) in Melbourne, Australia. Over 10,000 spectators attended in person, and 41,275 watched the live stream online.
A video of Erin’s winning brewing performance is available here. During the presentation, Erin explains the process of preparing and roasting the coffee and highlights tasting notes for a panel of judges.
The new title is the latest in a string of wins for Erin, who took top honors in April at the U.S. Brewers Cup in Boston, which is hosted by the Specialty Coffee Association of America, and was a finalist at the Northeast Regional Brewers Cup Competition in February.
Erin grew up on Long Island and moved to Ithaca, NY in 2003, where he worked his first job in the coffee industry at Gimme! Coffee. He started as a barista then became the NYC Regional Trainer/Manager, a position in which he trained fellow baristas and worked on wholesale accounts. Eight years later, he moved to Athens, GA to join the team at 1000 Faces Coffee, where he trained baristas, roasted coffee, led cuppings, ran the farmer’s market stand, and helped open a cafe. Erin joined the Counter Culture team in NYC in 2012, where he guides cuppings, teaches labs, and works in technical services as a machine technician.
