Using the fourth generation of Mater-Bi®, a biodegradable and compostable bioplastic, Novamont has produced coffee capsules and pods that can be disposed of with organic waste, without having to separate out the coffee content from the packaging.

It is estimated that around 10 billion coffee capsules are sent to landfill every year in the United States alone.coffee capsule

Speaking of the launch, Alessandro Ferlito, Novamont’s Commercial Director, said: “The remarkable success of portioned coffee has inevitably created a problem for managing the end-of-life of the containers used to prepare it. With today’s announcement, we are providing a solution which solves this problem, introducing environmental sustainability to portioned coffee.”

Competing bioplastics firm, Biome Bioplastics, has also recently unveiled a compostable coffee capsule.
