Everyman Espresso Barista Places 1st in Big Eastern Barista Championships

Best Baristas in Region Go Head to Head

Barista Sam Lewontin of Everyman Espresso has been named the best barista this weekend at the United States Coffee Championship¹s Big Eastern Competition, clinching the prize with his signature Espresso Old Fashioned made from beans by legendary Salvadorian coffee producer Aida Batlle (named the “Lady Gaga of Coffee” by The New Yorker).

Along with the top prize, Everyman Espresso¹s barista Erika Vonie placed 4th place in the competition, in which baristas had fifteen minutes of preparation and then a fifteen minute “performance,” in which they exhibited their form and flair while preparing four espressos, four cappuccinos, and four signature drinks for the judges. While serving his drinks, Lewontin discussed the process that goes into each cup of coffee.

“It¹s an incredible team effort,” says Lewontin, “to make any espresso drink. For the competition, I talked about the process the beans took to get to the room and what a team effort it is. I¹ve been actively preparing for this for six weeks, but I¹ve had so much help. From the people who pick the coffee in El Salvador, to Aida, who helped me select exactly the right beans, to the lab team at Manhattan¹s Counter Culture, who helped me find the perfect roast, to the Everyman team who gave me performance notes.”

“The competition this year was really heavy hitting,” added Vonie, “but that pushed me to be even more meticulous about my preparation. Sam and I spent a lot of time before and during the competition tasting each other¹s drinks and helping each other prepare. The teamwork obviously paid off.”

Lewontin and Vonie will now prepare to compete on the national scale at the 2015 United States Coffee Championship¹s Nationals in Long Beach from February 19th-22nd.
