Counter Culture Coffee released its annual transparency report today. The report, which the company has published since 2009, offers a succinct, straightforward summary of the company’s past year and its coffee purchases and history with producing partners.
The latest iteration of this report continues to push the boundaries of Counter Culture’s transparency, bridging the gap between consumer and producer. The report combines the company’s annual, sustainability, and coffee-purchasing reports—sharing coffee-purchasing information at a level unmatched in the industry.
“In terms of responsible sourcing, how you buy coffee is just as important as the coffee you buy,” says Meredith Taylor, the sustainability manager at Counter Culture Coffee. “The goal of this report is to give data-based insights into that ‘how’ for Counter Culture Coffee.”
Counter Culture grew tremendously in 2016. It relocated its Durham headquarters and roastery to a larger space and expanded on the West Coast by opening a training center in Los Angeles—its second location in California along with its Emeryville roastery. This new report shows the company’s growth over 2016 and uses plain data to give insights into the company’s progress towards their quality, education, and sustainability commitments. These insights include buying 99% of coffee through partnerships rather than spot purchases, spending 3,562 hours educating baristas and home enthusiasts, and granting $18,500 to farmer-identified origin sustainability projects.
The coffee company hopes that the level of transparency in this report empowers consumers in their purchasing process, enables producing-partners to feel confident in their partnerships with the company, and encourages its competitors to do the same.
