Austin Startup Wink Coffee Grows 350 Percent Amid Shutdown, Projects More Than $1 Million In Sales In 2021

AUSTIN, TX (October 2020) – As the pandemic settles in and more and more Americans try to recreate the experience of high-end java at home, three Austin entrepreneurs — Craig Harper, Jay Hazari and Jayson Rapaport — are utilizing their expertise to deliver Wink Coffee straight to people’s percolators.

Since the shutdown in April 2020, Wink’s sales have increased more than 350 percent and sales are projected to hit more than $1 million in 2021. “What started as a side hobby in fall 2019 has since quickly turned into a thriving business,” says Jayson Rapaport, who co-owns Birds Barbershop, which keeps him plenty busy. “With such a diverse team and supportive small business community behind us, we think Wink Coffee will be the next coffee brand success story to come out of Austin. ”

According to Wink’s founders, they identified an opportunity to bring high-quality coffee direct to consumers at an affordable price. Wink’s single-origin, premium roasts offer an extraordinary value at $17.95 for an oversized 2.2 lb bag, which could easily be sold for double the price.

“My family is in the hotel business, and since the beginning we’ve tried to elevate the in-room coffee experience without breaking the bank,” says Jay Hazari, who went so far as to acquire his own roaster to deliver on the promise. “My family has been roasting coffee for 20 years, and it’s been so much fun using all of this experience to help create Wink and reach an even bigger audience of coffee drinkers.”

“We were just kicking around business ideas and found the online world was lacking just as much, if not more than, all those hotels serving ground coffee out of a plastic bag,” added Rapaport. “We realized we had roasting expertise and capacity sitting right here in Texas waiting for the right utilization to come along.”

With the help of co-founder Craig Harper, whose business Bat City Digital manages digital marketing campaigns for both large and startup brands, Wink Coffee was born online. Currently, the beans are available for purchase on Amazon or at, with an expansion into select retailers planned for 2021.

Wink’s product offerings include their best selling Blonde Roast, “All Nighter,” “Donut Shop” and espresso varieties, which are micro-roasted in small batches to ensure freshness. Wink uses 100 percent Arabica beans grown at higher elevations in Colombia that require a lot of attention to bring out the perfect taste. All Wink Coffee beans are Rainforest Alliance certified, which represents a growing network of farmers, foresters, communities, scientists, governments, environmentalists, and businesses dedicated to conserving biodiversity and ensuring sustainable livelihoods.

“At Wink, we understand that the choice to drink delicious, honestly sourced coffee is not a fad or a trend. It’s a decision people are making for the long term,” says Harper. “And, increasingly, people are expecting that taste to come from their coffee makers, not just a barista charging $5 a cup.”
