This speakeasy hidden behind a coffee shop serves really good cocktails

New Yorkers adore speakeasies, and there is a relatively new one in Greenpoint that deserves your attention right now. Ninety Nine Franklin is concealed behind an espresso bar on—wait for it—99 Franklin St. It is open late and serves excellent cocktails.

To begin, a word about how to locate it. To begin, make your way to the daytime cafe, which opened in mid-2021, and look for a slightly open door at the back of the establishment. As you enter, you’re greeted by a dark but welcoming room that features a sleek bar and modern finishes throughout. Additionally, there is a heated patio in the backyard, complete with a circular fireplace!

The speakeasy, Ninety Nine Franklin, opened towards the end of 2021, transforming the address into a 24-hour operation. The espresso bar is open daily from 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. and serves excellent coffee drinks as well as breakfast and lunch. Sundays and Mondays are closed, but the bar reopens at 6:30pm on the other days of the week (closing time is midnight on Tuesdays through Thursdays and 2am on Fridays and Saturdays).

Cocktails cost between $12 and $14 and, as is the case with virtually every speakeasy in this great city, they are all absolutely delicious.

We do recommend indulging in some classic cocktails (after all, they are classics for a reason), such as the Old Fashioned and the Martini. However, if you’re looking for a twist on the traditional, the bar is certain to deliver. Consider the Queens margarita, which combines tequila, Cointreau, ginger, agave, and lime, or a mezcal Negroni, which combines the smoky liquor with Campari, sweet vermouth, and orange zest. Additionally, the bartenders will prepare you a rather tasty Free Smoke—made with smoked scotch, lemon, amaro, and ginger—that will certainly clear your sinuses.
