‘Elevated Coffee Experience’: Family-Run Gems & Joe Cafe Opens in Allentown

Gems & Joe, a family-run specialty coffee shop in Allentown, has opened its doors in December. The cafe, which seats around 20 customers, is owned by Allentown native Jewel Jones and is managed by her father, Felton Jones, and her sister, Jayonah Jones, as head barista. The shop embodies the third wave coffee movement, focusing on high-quality coffee beans sourced from smaller, individual farms and roasted more lightly to bring out unique flavors.

Gems & Joe sources coffee from California coffee roasters, including Los Angeles-based Mad Lab Coffee Roasters, which offers a variety of high-quality roasts and blends, including the popular Doc Brown blend featuring Colombian and Ethiopian beans with tasting notes that include chocolate, marshmallow fluff, and fig jam. The shop’s commitment to quality, sustainability, and an elevated coffee experience is evident in its Instagram page.

Customers can choose from an array of freshly prepared coffee drinks, including drip coffee, espresso, Americano, cortado, cappuccino, mocha, lattes, and cold-brew coffee. Drip coffee starts at $3 per cup and can be customized with syrups such as lavender and salted caramel, as well as milks like oat and almond. In addition to coffee, customers can enjoy hot or iced tea, matcha lattes, chai lattes, and hot cocoa.

Gems & Joe also offers fresh baked goods such as cookies, croissants, and pain au chocolat from Allentown-based chef Sophie Vandecasteele. The food menu is set to expand in the coming months, with plans to offer more pastries and sandwiches. The shop is open 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday through Friday and 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays.
