Mushroom coffee is a blend of coffee beans and dehydrated ground mushrooms, with various types including reishi, lion’s mane, chaga, cordyceps, and turkey tail. The marketing pitches suggest that drinking this coffee can improve focus, boost immunity, and positively impact memory and mood.

Medicinal mushrooms have a long history in traditional medicine, and their extract contains potent antioxidants like phenolic compounds, vitamin C, vitamin E, and carotenoids. However, it is unknown whether these mushrooms have positive effects on health conditions such as stress, influenza, chronic kidney disease, or asthma. Research is often conducted on mushrooms themselves, not the coffee pod.

Mushroom coffee may contain slightly lower caffeine content compared to a standard cup of brew, but this doesn’t always apply when comparing products head-to-head. Additionally, the cost difference between a single-serving pod of mushroom coffee and coffee without mushrooms is significant.

Nutrients eaten together create additive effects, known as food or nutrition synergy.
