Three Brothers Coffee makes the push to become one of the first unionized shops in Tennessee

A coffee shop on West End Avenue near Vanderbilt University is organising its employees in an attempt to unionise. Three Brothers Coffee, if successful, would be one of the state’s first unionised coffee shops.

Nashville’s cost of living continues to rise. Three Brothers Coffee employees say this is one of several reasons they want to form a union — to bargain for benefits such as higher wages, insurance, and paid time off.

“We discuss our livelihoods,” says Anfernee Welch, a Three Brothers employee, “and the fragility of working on a basic wage, or a fluctuating wage, and relying on tips.” That initiated the conversation.”

On Friday, Welch and other employees presented their management with a letter of intent.
