A Philz Coffee in Berkeley Just Became the First Shop to Unionize

Philz Coffee in Berkeley has voted to unionize, with all 16 staff members supporting the nascent union, Philz Coffee United. The move comes after eight employees were allegedly sent home for their pro-Palestine pins in December. Philz Coffee CEO Mahesh Sadarangani plans to work with the union. The company faced challenges last year, closing its flagship location on 24th Street in October 2023, and workers reported poor conditions in a building owned by the company through Humble Lion.
