The whole thing grew out of a slight misunderstanding.

At a hair past 3 p.m. last Saturday, Erin Dummert was trying to hunt down a decaf latte with almond milk and caramel for her 14-year-old daughter and found herself outside the Royal Cafe & Creperie in downtown Matthews.

She could see two women behind the counter through the window, but when she tried the door, it was locked. So she knocked, thinking that maybe this was just how Royal was doing business during the pandemic.
