This Female Founder Is Challenging The Status Quo In The $200 Billion Global Coffee Industry

Maria Palacio is a 5th generation Colombian coffee farmer. She founded Progeny Coffee to directly tackle the issues that caused her father to lose his coffee farm years ago. She says, “I come from the coffee belt of Colombia, and my whole family has been involved in the coffee industry. Everyone around me in the industry struggles to keep their farms break-even.”

According to Palacio, most coffee farmers in Colombia operate at a 20% operating loss. “Coffee is one of the only industries I know where the entrepreneurs, or the farmers themselves, do not know their margin. Who wants to run a company that way? As an entrepreneur, I think it is crazy to run a company like that,” she says.
