When it comes to staying hydrated, the majority of people will praise water. Water is obviously hydrating. However, coffee lovers frequently hear that their favorite beverage is dehydrating, but is this true?
Can coffee hydrate you? As it turns out, the beverage has been maligned without justification.
While it’s not a good idea to completely replace water and other beverages with coffee, a cup of coffee can help you stay hydrated. However, the hydrating properties of coffee depend on its caffeine content.
Coffee contains caffeine, which is a diuretic, and you’re probably already gone. It causes the body to produce more urine and may increase kidney blood flow. The result is increased urination, which may affect hydration. The caffeine content and frequency of coffee consumption determine whether or not it is hydrating.
Regular coffee drinkers can develop tolerance to the diuretic effects of moderate amounts of caffeine over time (think your daily cup). They will have minimal to no impact on hydration.
Regarding caffeine content, coffees containing greater amounts (over 500 mg) will be more diuretic and have a greater effect on urine output and hydration levels. If, however, you consume less than 250 mg of caffeine per day, your coffee can count toward your daily hydration needs.
So the belief that coffee causes dehydration? It is highly unlikely to be the case. In fact, moderate coffee consumption can contribute to your daily hydration needs. However, you should also consume water alongside other hydrating beverages.
