A daily half-cup of coffee may keep your children out of the NBA.
A new study published by the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) on Tuesday suggests that drinking a mere half-cup of coffee daily during pregnancy can reduce your child’s height by nearly an inch by the time they reach elementary school.
The study, a collaboration between over ten physicians and researchers, surveyed nearly 2,500 children in the United States between the ages of 4 and 8. This study utilized blood samples to determine the exact levels of caffeine and its metabolite paraxanthine, as opposed to previous studies that relied on mothers’ self-reports of coffee consumption.
“Although the clinical implications of a difference in height of approximately 2 centimeters are unclear, our findings for height are comparable in magnitude to those of children whose mothers smoked during pregnancy,” the study revealed.
We consistently observed shorter height, which has been linked to an increased risk of multiple cardiometabolic diseases in pregnant and non-pregnant individuals.
Included among the possible co-morbidities are diabetes and obesity. Additionally, prior research has linked moderate coffee consumption during pregnancy to a lower birth weight.
