Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Tuesday assured growers that she would address the coffee sector’s problems. “I know the coffee sector has been going through a bad phase for several years in succession,” she said. “The sector suffered three years of drought, followed by two years of floods and this year, the pandemic hit the industry badly,” she said during a virtual conference organised by coffee associations.
Honduran coffee exports dropped 29.6% in June from a year earlier after farmers cut production because of drought and low global prices, national coffee institute IHCAFE said on Wednesday.
Due to recent lack of rainfall, traders said the 2019/20 crop would likely face drought, which could lead to a dip in the production. Moreover, abundant supply of robusta beans from Brazil would also drag Vietnam’s prices lower.
