California coffee shop, Philz Coffee has teamed up with plant-based
The layoff became effective today, and ten baristas alleged to Mission Local that several of those who were let go had denied management’s repeated requests to go back to work because they feared the impact of coronavirus on their health.
The lost jobs come on the heels of weeks of turmoil for the Bay Area-based coffee chain, with more than 100 employees organizing to protest Philz’ handling of worker safety during the pandemic and skewering its reaction to the Black Lives Matter movement. Staff posted anti-Philz leaflets across downtown San Francisco and circulated that messaging on social media.
Philz Coffee has reopened 27 of its stores across the Bay Area under a new mobile pickup concept that follows the state’s mandated social distancing guidelines.
