First Time Entry Takes First Place.
[wpg width=”300″ height=”225″ align=”right”]After 5,634 cups were prepared, analyzed and scored and after both the Brazilian national jury and the International jury chose their favorite coffee Jesimar de Oliveira Sandi walked away with the top prize for the Brazil Late Harvest (Naturals) Cup of Excellence® competition.
Never having entered the contest before he was overwhelmed to be named the first place among the 22 winners at the recent celebration held in Varghina, Brazil. His final score of 92.13 ranked him almost 2 points over the next contender. He will now join a select group of farmers that rank among the best producers in the world. Sweet notes of caramel, honey and brown sugar with fruity notes of stone fruits, raisins, wine, berries and tamarind dominated the flavor descriptors for the 22 winners. The highest quality naturals have very creamy body and these were no exception.
The International jury, hailing from 11 different countries arrived on Sunday to spend the week cupping at the MINASUL cooperative one of the largest coffee cooperatives in the world which has 5,000 grower members and processes 1.2million bags a year. The jury, staff and farmers were met with an international film crew creating a documentary about exceptional coffees and the Cup of Excellence competition process.
Naturals account for 88% of Brazils entire coffee production and while Carmo de Minas dominated the list of the 22 winners the top 3 places went to growers outside this famous growing region. All 22 of these unique Brazil winning coffees will be auctioned to the highest bidder on March 14th, 2013 on the new Alliance for Coffee Excellence website.
