Woods’ fourteenth Whatcom County site to open March 18.

Bellingham, WA — March 11, 2013 — The Woods Coffee today announced the final details for the opening of their newest location, just east off I-5 on Lakeway Drive, in Bellingham. Woods’ fourteenth Whatcom County coffee shop is scheduled to open on Monday, March 18.
“This intersection seems to be one of the major crossroads of our city, so we’re anticipating guests from all directions,” said Wes Herman, owner of The Woods Coffee. “From Western students to Lakeway shoppers, commuters to sports complex visitors, not to mention hotel visitors and those using the Airporter Shuttle, we’re expecting a steady stream of guests, particularly for the drive-thru.”
To accommodate the traffic, the Woods’ newest location will include a drive-thru with lots of room and easy ordering, as well as plenty of parking. Inside, the 1,800 square-foot space will feature a salvaged wood ceiling, old barn hardware, and booth seating, which has been a popular feature since being introduced at the new Barkley location this past December.
“That was the first time we used booth seating in one of our coffee shops, and it’s been a real hit,” said Herman.
As part of the company’s commitment to using sustainable design and building practices, all of the wood inside the new Lakeway Woods Coffee shop is reclaimed, salvaged, or repurposed from local sources. The same is also true for Woods’ new location in Barkley Village.
Similar to its locations at Boulevard Park, on Railroad Avenue, and in the old Flatiron building, in downtown Bellingham, this coffee shop is the latest example of the company reinvigorating a previously underused or abandoned building. Herman says the Lakeway site has received more interest than any other site in recent years.
“I think it’s the way we’ve transformed the space. Others wanted to demolish the building and start over, but we saw promise in the structure,” said Herman. “We love to salvage old buildings and rework them. This building had seen it’s better days, but now it doesn’t even resemble the previous structure.”
In addition to the Woods’ newest coffee shop, the company plans to lease the remaining 2,200 square feet of space on the west, freeway-facing side of the building. The occupying tenant for this space has yet to be announced.
The building has a long history, with many different businesses, tracing all the way back to the original Sambos restaurant. After Sambo’s closed, the building later became a Pizza Hut, and then, most recently, Lychee Buffet restaurant, which vacated the space in 2011.
