Groundwork Coffee Co. Expands to Pacific Northwest, Acquires Portland’s Original Micro-Roaster Kobos Coffee


Venice Beach, California-Originated Organic Sustainable Roaster Groundwork Opening in Portland, Oregon

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE – Groundwork Coffee Co., the USDA certified organic roasting company founded in Venice Beach, California in 1990, has acquired Portland’s original micro-roaster Kobos Coffee roastery and shop at 2355 NW Vaughn Street, Portland, Oregon. Celebrating its 25th anniversary, this marks Groundwork’s first expansion outside of California, joining Portland’s thriving coffee culture with the shared values of sustainability, community and the highest quality coffee.

Groundwork began in Venice Beach, California as a rare books store and coffee shop with a single roaster. Local demand soon became so great that Groundwork began roasting full-time. The small-batch operation soon morphed into one of the very first certified organic coffee roasters in California, and quickly became the largest organic coffee roaster in Los Angeles. Throughout this growth they’ve maintained an unwavering commitment to sustainable, relationship-based, organic coffee sourcing, setting an industry standard along with its solar-powered, low-emissions roasting technology. Today, Groundwork operates eight café locations throughout the Los Angeles area and distributes its coffees to more than 900 food service and grocery customers across the U.S. Through excellence in sourcing and batch roasting fresh each day, only the best product makes it to the shelves of Groundwork’s shops and retail, office and wholesale customers.

The Groundwork team includes three partners: Head of Business Development, Sales, and Marketing Eddy Cola; Head of Operations and Finance Steven Levan; and Chief Coffee Guy Jeff Chean. Starting with the finest organic green coffee beans, Licensed Q Grader Jeff Chean and his team fine-tune each batch of Specialty Coffee to bring out its true characteristics in roasting. Groundwork sources only USDA certified organic and sustainably grown coffee and tea. They are also an active partner in Rainforest Alliance and Fair Trade USA, organizations designed to promote ecological, social and economic health in communities around the world.

Founded in 1973, Kobos Coffee was Portland’s original coffee micro-roaster and owners Dave and Susan Kobos are among the region’s most well respected roasters. Kobos laid the foundation for the city’s now renowned specialty coffee scene, creating and supporting the concept of sustainability in the Portland coffee industry. Its roasting facility surpasses D.E.Q. environmental standards, features energy efficient L.E.D. lighting and uses an energy efficient Loring coffee roaster. In selling Kobos to Groundwork Coffee Co., Kobos’ legacy of roasting the highest quality coffee for his community will be honored and expanded upon. Dave will remain a hands-on figure at the company for the next several months to ensure the smoothest transition for all employees and customers. Groundwork is excited to offer all current Kobos staff, including those at Kobos’ SW Market St. location that is soon shuttering due to an expiring lease, opportunities to grow their positions within the new Groundwork company.

Groundwork is committed to developing lasting relationships with the community. This is demonstrated in their ongoing partnerships with community-building charitable organizations, as well as featuring local food artisans and farmers in the food served at all of their cafés. Groundwork offers over a dozen Signature Blend roasts to suit any coffee drinker’s palate, their most popular blends being Black Gold and Black Magic espresso. These blends are complemented by a variety of high-quality, single-origin coffees. They bottle their wildly popular certified organic Cold Brew, steeped for 24 hours and made without additives or preservatives, available in ready-to-drink and concentrate formats. From traditional blends to single estate teas, Groundwork cafes also feature a carefully curated selection of organic teas focusing on traditional Indian, Chinese and Japanese styles as well as a wide range of tisanes. In addition to fine beverages, Groundwork cafés serve “grab ‘n’ go” breakfasts, salads, and sandwiches, baked goods, and an expansive made-to-order menu – all using locally sourced ingredients.

The new Portland café location on NW Vaughn St. will be renovated to reflect the Groundwork ethos – warm, inviting and embodying the flavor of the neighborhood – and is expected to open in mid summer 2016. While under construction, Groundwork plans to maintain coffee service from the counter so their new neighbors won’t have to go without their coffee fix as the space transitions.
