S&D Coffee & Tea Honored for Sustainability Efforts by Cabarrus Regional Chamber of Commerce

The Cabarrus Regional Chamber of Commerce recently awarded S&D Coffee & Tea its 2014 Environmental Excellence & Sustainability Award for the company’s efforts in waste reduction. The award was presented at Celebrate Cabarrus, a gala to recognize and honor accomplishments of individuals and businesses hosted by the Chamber, Economic Development Corporation and Cabarrus Convention and Visitors Bureau.“We are very proud and tremendously honored by this recognition for our sustainability efforts. It is remarkable how passionately and successfully our operations team reduced waste so significantly over a short time,” said John Weibel, environmental systems program manager for S&D. “Our team continues to work diligently toward our sustainability goals and is eager to make an even greater impact — and with a team like this, I have no doubt that we will.”

S&D has taken a leadership position in sustainability by establishing a goal of zero waste to landfill by 2020. Within two years, S&D has reduced its waste to landfill at manufacturing operations by 25 percent and increased composting activities by 70 percent. In pursuit of the larger goal, S&D has improved collection systems for compostable coffee byproducts and added containers to aid in the ease and adoption of recycling behaviors. The company also continues to focus on educating and creating awareness of waste reduction and recycling actions and continually audits their waste streams to identify additional reduction opportunities.
