Mothers around the world will enjoy afternoon tea at a wide range of places on Mother’s Day, but it can be a great experience any time. Here are some places to check out as you travel.
THE BAUR AU LAC, ZURICH
Set in the hotel’s recently renovated Le Hall, afternoon tea here includes homemade scones, pastries, sandwiches, fresh clotted cream, and an assortment of freshly brewed loose-leaf teas from Switzerland’s Länggass teahouse. This historic space has also welcomed Alfred Nobel, Marc Chagall and Richard Wagner through the years.
For a truly royal experience, The Grand Cuvee Package at the d’Angleterre serves Krug Grand Cuvee champagne alongside its traditional afternoon tea. A selection of teas (and coffees) is prepared with traditional smoked salmon sandwiches, cakes, mini-quiches, tarts and gateaux. Champagne is paired with lavish delicacies such lobster and truffles. The hotel’s Krug afternoon tea is served from 3 to 5 p.m. every Sunday in the Gallery Hall.
THE MERRION, DUBLIN
The Merrion in Dublin offers an incredibly lavish Art Tea, for which the pastry chef creates decadent desserts inspired by 19th- and 20th-century artworks from Irish and British artists including J.B Yeats, William Scott and Louis le Brocquy. On display throughout the hotel is the largest collection of private art in Ireland outside of the National Gallery.
THE MILESTONE, LONDON
The five-star Milestone Hotel, a quintessentially English mansion-hotel opposite Kensington Palace and Gardens, offers an Afternoon Tea that includes delicate finger sandwiches such as Smoked Scottish salmon and cream cheese, free-range egg mayonnaise and Hampshire watercress, Mull of Kintyre Cheddar and tomato, and chicken mayonnaise with chopped almonds, warm freshly baked scones served with Devonshire clotted cream and homemade strawberry preserves, as well as éclairs, tartlets and macarons. A selection of teas accompanies the meal, along with a bottle of champagne.
ASHFORD CASTLE, COUNTY MAYO, IRELAND
The tradition of afternoon tea has been wonderfully preserved at the historic Ashford Castle since 1868 with a menu offering a wide selection of specialty teas or a glass of Champagne, delicate finger sandwiches, warm freshly baked scones with lashings of cream and home-made jam,plus pastries and cupcakes.
THE LODGE AT ASHFORD CASTLE, COUNTY MAYO, IRELAND
The Lodge at Ashford, a four-star hotel on the grounds of the Castle’s 350-acre estate, offers its own Picnic Afternoon Tea menu, using ingredients sourced from the estate or local artisan suppliers. The savory basket includes Kelly’s of Newport lamb sausage roll, Andarl Farm pork pie with apple jelly and Burren Smoke House Salmon with Dillisk Cream Cheese. Salads include red cabbage and fennel slaw, Kilmaine potato salad and organic leaves with a honey and mustard dressing. Crème Brûlée, tiramisu espresso and Bea Tollman’s cheesecake will satisfy those with a sweet tooth, and a cool and refreshing ginger beer or iced tea are a perfect accompaniment to hot tea.
HOTEL ADLON KEMPINSKI, GERMANY
At Berlin’s landmark Hotel Adlon Kempinski, the Royal Afternoon Tea service in the brand-new Lobby Lounge & Bar and Bel Etage has been prepared for state heads, aristocrats, presidents and stars from all over the world. An array of savory and sweet classic tea accoutrements are served, sprinkled with a few classic German delicacies such as roast beef sandwiches and German profiterole.
INKATERRA MACHU PICCHU PUEBLO HOTEL, PERU
