New York, New York – May 24, 2016 – Birch Coffee announces the opening of their newest coffee shop located in the South Bronx. Opening on May 24, 2016, number eight in the Birch collection will be the first specialty coffee shop in the Hunts Point neighborhood.
Birch Coffee’s founders, Jeremy Lyman and Paul Schlader, open the newest Birch location in partnership with local Bronx real estate developer Majora Carter. Carter is a Peabody Award-winning radio host and MacArthur ‘genius’ Fellow who launched the technology services company StartUp Box in 2014. After conducting hundreds of interviews with people who live and work in Hunts Point, Majora’s team recognized a need for a local coffee shop, and spent time researching potential partners for this endeavor before meeting Paul and Jeremy through their mutual friend, Sulma Arzu-Brown, Director of Operations at the NYC Hispanic Chamber of Commerce. They soon realized their goals were aligned and this was a perfect partnership.
The baristas at the new Birch shop will be from the local neighborhood and personally trained by the Birch team. Shop number eight in the Birch Coffee collection will provide local residents with a new place to meet and discuss ideas as coffee shops have always been intended to — all while enjoying a great cup of coffee.
The shop’s design features exposed brick walls, reclaimed barnwood, and stone countertops donated by the Colonna Marble Company around the corner. The new shop is located at 866 Hunts Point Avenue in close proximity to the 2, 5, and 6 train subway stops, and a Metro North Station scheduled to open in 2018.
The Birch Coffee founders strive to use coffee as a medium for bringing people together. The Bronx location is no exception with programming planned to welcome the neighborhood including live music & poetry events and coffee education classes. Birch now operates seven stores in Flatiron, West Village, Upper East Side, Upper West Side, Murray Hill, Long Island City and Lower Manhattan. Paul Schlader oversees Birch’s coffee roasting at their Long Island City roast house, a commitment to controlling every step of the process and delivering excellent quality coffee. The Birch entrepreneurs continue weaving their dream of providing great coffee and excellent customer service into a New York success story.
About Birch: Birch was started in 2009 on East 27th Street by two guys, Jeremy Lyman and Paul Schlader, whose goal was to serve great quality coffee with exemplary customer service. And since then, Jeremy and Paul use due diligence to research the market in order to avoid industry conventions. They source their beans directly from the best coffee farms from around the globe and roast their coffee in small batches at their 4,000 foot roast house in Long Island City. In addition to their coffee shops, they also offer a Birch Coffee School where you can take a variety of classes including cupping, home brewing 101 as well as barista training and technical skills. www.birchcoffee.com
