Come One, Come All, to Oregon’s 2013 Best Coffee Championships
Saturday, August 24th at the Oregon State Fair in Salem
Medford, OR On Saturday, August 24th, roasters will gather at The Oregon State Fair in Salem to see who will ultimately hold the title of 2013 Best Coffee in Oregon. The competition will begin at 10am and run until noon. This annual event brought 30 coffee roasters from across the state for a preliminary round of competition in early summer, 21 roasters were selected in the preliminary round and will go on for the crowning of the product winners during the State Fair next weekend in Salem.
Participating roaster’s coffees will be judged in three categories: Signature Blend, Single-Varietal and Espresso. Gold, Silver and bronze winners will be chosen from each category and the best of all will hold the title of “2013 Best Coffee In Oregon.” Top competitors including such prestigious roasters as McMenamins, Portland Roasting, K & F Coffee, Full City, Boyds, Black Rock, and Strictly Organic to name a few. Southern Oregon preliminary winners include Mellelo Coffee Roasters (Medford), Quackenbush Coffee (Klamath Falls), Case Coffee Roasters (Ashland) and Rogue Roasters of Grants Pass.
The 2013 judges for the Best Coffee in Oregon competition include Ted VanderMeer of Coffee Connection, Marcus Young of Central City Coffee, Kerri Goodman from CoffeeTalk Magazine, Don Berquist of Rancilio, Reg Trading’s Janet DeGuzman and Portland Barista Josh Toole.
This year’s championships are being sponsored in part and directed by Michael Kell of GoodBean Coffee in Jacksonville, Oregon whose brand of coffee took two Gold Medals in 2010 and 2011. Kell will be sitting out of the competition based on his position this year, but he remains enthusiastic as things continue to heat up in Oregon’s coffee-roasting arena. “This is a world-class competition,” he explained. “Oregon has the most amazing specialty coffee roasters and retailers in the country. It’s always exciting to see who will make their mark and who will rise as the winner!”
