Cafe Kreyol: Organic Haïtian Blue

Fairfax, VA  — Having come out of times of poverty and hopelessness ourselves, even including prison, we had experienced life at it’s darkest.  With new hearts and a desire to become the face of hope and redemption in this world, we decided to use our ability to survive (and our non-accredited business skills) to try to help others who lived in a place where we too had once been.  In January 2012, we traveled from Northern Virginia to Haïti, the most poverty stricken country in the Western Hemisphere.  There we bought motorcycles, and scouted out each coffee growing region.  We slowly learned the language and began to share our vision of sustainable employment with local growers.  This Direct Trade system, which is the backbone of Cafe Kreyól, believes that quality and sustainability go hand in hand and that farmers should get paid based on the quality of their product.  We practice that belief by paying up to 300% higher wages than what Fair Trade requires for truly exceptional coffee.  Our story continues as we work to alleviate poverty in rural coffee growing regions, one cup at a time.
