NEW WORLD RECORD COFFEE IS ON IT’S WAY TO THE UNITED STATES
A natural processed Geisha micro lot of Hacienda La Esmeralda, Esmeralda Geisha Cañas Verdes Natural, has set a new world record price for any coffee lot ever sold at auction, selling for a staggering $601.00 USD per pound ($1,324.96 USD per kg). Grown in the rich soil of the slopes of the Volcan Baru, Esmeralda Geisha Cañas Verdes Natural promised to be an exclusive commodity from the start. Only 1,385 pounds of red ripe coffee cherries were harvested in the Montaña lot, located in the Cañas Verdes Farm, on February 20th, 2017. These hand-picked cherries were dried on a concrete patio for 8 days until they reached the ideal humidity level of 10.5%. After careful processing, only 150 pounds (68.04 kg) of green coffee remained, just enough to be eligible for the Best of Panama Competition.
After a fierce competition of 5 hours and 270 bids, the winning bid came from Hong Kong specialty coffee buyers Kew Specialty Coffee, Sydney Coffee Business Pty. Ltd. of Australia. The two boxes of Esmeralda Geisha Cañas Verdes Natural – each weighing 50 pounds (22.68 kg) – sold for $60,100.00 USD, at an amazing average of $601.00 USD per pound ($1,324.96 USD per kg). The bid surpassed the previous world record price for auction coffees – $350.00 USD per pound (US$771.60 per kg) – a title held by the same farm. Jason Kew, aged 49, from Kew Specialty Coffee and Sydney Coffee Business stated “The Peterson family’s commitment to quality in a consistent manner that maintains the heritage of ‘Geisha’ is a true legacy for generations to cherish.”
Coffee lovers in America will be able to try the award-winning Esmeralda Geisha Cañas Verdes Natural this year as Klatch Coffee of California was part of Kew’s winning team. Roast-Master Mike Perry was one of the International judges at The Best of Panama 2017 competition with Jason where both fell in love with this coffee. Of course, the two were not alone as the International Jury gave this Panama Geisha the highest score ever in the history of the Best of Panama. Flavors and cupping notes from the jury included; strawberry, blueberry, raspberry, jasmine, peach, candied fruit, sugar cane, sweet, intense and wow. But this is not Klatch’s first experience with this coffee. Perry has been traveling to Panama and Esmeralda for over 10 years and last year, Todd Goldsworthy of Klatch Coffee used beans from the Montana lot to win the United States Brewers Cup championship. The record setting Esmeralda Geisha Cañas Verdes Natural will be in good hands for the US coffee industry.
Following the auction, Kew and Perry worked out a game-changing deal to not only allow Klatch Coffee to be the only US Roaster with the Esmeralda Geisha Cañas Verdes Natural, but also crafted a blueprint together in order to share this with coffee lovers around the world. Both agreed a coffee like this needs to be shared with as many people as possible. The plan features the top roasters from around the world hosting events where the coffee will be served by the cup. Event details are being worked out but Klatch Coffee plans to serve both industry and public attendants, not only the Esmeralda Geisha Cañas Verdes Natural, but also the natural geisha from 2nd place Altieri and a washed geisha from Esmeralda. More information will be released soon on www.klatchroasting.com.
