Third Wave Water Lands a Deal for its Coffee Product on Shark Tank
Dayton, Ohio – October 9, 2017 – A small-town Ohio startup, Third Wave Water, has taken the international coffee industry by storm, showcasing its product that claims to create the perfect water for brewing coffee on Shark Tank Sunday evening. Co-founders Taylor Minor and Charles Nick landed a deal with with Barbara Corcoran, billion-dollar real estate mogul, for a $100,000 investment.
Third Wave Water impressed the Sharks with the dramatic difference in coffee after using the company’s capsule, which, when added to a gallon of distilled water, creates a delicate balance of minerals, ensuring perfect water for a perfect cup of coffee.
The company’s mineral blend meets the Specialty Coffee Association’s standard for optimal brewing water, and claims to allow consumers to taste the flavor of coffee beans as they are meant to be tasted.
“Coffee is 98% water, so the kind of water you use matters,” said Minor. “Tap water is full of contaminants and minerals that can dramatically alter your cup of coffee. Most coffee shops use a water filtration system that takes care of that issue, but it isn’t practical for home use. Now you can get café style coffee right in your kitchen.”
According to Nick, Third Wave Water can be used no matter how consumers choose to brew their coffee – from a pour over to a Keurig.
“Third Wave Water is also a much better alternative to tap water for coffee machines,” said Nick. “The blend helps keep machines running smoothly and prevents scaling and mineral build-up.”
Although all Sharks agreed Third Wave Water coffee was significantly better than a cup made with local tap water, Corcoran was sold enough to make the offer.
Initially asking for 33 percent equity, Minor and Nick countered offering 25 percent with Corcoran getting a $1 royalty on every pack until her money is recouped.
“I would happily take that because, you know what, that is actually what I wanted,” said Corcoran.
Minor and Nick, Marine Veteran and NASA employee respectively, are now both owners of small-town coffee businesses in Ohio, which initially created the friendship.
“We were just having lunch one day and talking about issues we both have with our customers’ water,” said Minor. “Then the idea of dehydrated water hit us. It’s been less than a year and we just were featured on Shark Tank. What a ride!”
Third Wave Water is temporarily offering a “Shark Tank Experience” product on their website, which includes Onyx coffee beans and the Third Wave Water profile used on the episode.
