Seattle Coffee Trader Draws from World Travel Experience to Pen a Dark, Brooding Thriller
DENVER. Oct. 20, 2017: By day, Craig Holt works as a coffee buyer, traveling across the globe to find the very best beans. By night, he’s a thriller author, drawing on his experience abroad to shape his stories.
His debut novel, Hard Dog to Kill, pulls from his three decades of experience in Africa.
“There aren’t many regions that match sub-Saharan Africa in terms of beauty, political upheaval and intricately woven cultural connections,” Holt said. “It’s that complexity that drew me to write about the Democratic Republic of the Congo and its combination of natural riches and human struggle.”
Hard Dog to Kill tells the story of hardened mercenaries, Stan Mullens and Frank Giordano, who fight their way across the Congo jungle in their quest to track down and kill a charismatic diamond miner. But their target is full of dangerous surprises, and the jungle offers more opportunities to die than to kill.
Though Holt’s desire first and foremost is to write great fiction, he also
hopes to show the reality of what’s happening in the region. “It’s my fascination with the beauty, promise and heartbreak of the DRC that inspired me to write this book,” Holt said.
“Given the way most outsiders have pillaged the Congo—often under the pretense of doing good—it was important to me that my protagonist came there not just as an outsider, but as an invader. Stan Mullens does just that, and learns some brutal lessons about the Congo, and himself, along the way.”
