PORTLAND, Maine – Coffee By Design (CBD) owners Mary Allen Lindemann and Alan Spear’s love for art and community filters its way into just about everything they do, from coffees by the pound that benefit community organizations to the local art shows displayed in their coffeehouses. The most recent example is the duo’s freshly installed kinetic art coffee cup sculpture, created by Jac Ouellette of South Portland, Maine’s AnvilJac Studio.

The cup sculpture is a unique art object, representing CBD’s connection to community, both here in Portland and in the coffee growing communities their beans are sourced from. Atop the Diamond Street roastery and coffee bar, the cup turns gently, powered by wind.

Sculpture Specifications:
Dimensions: 15’ tall
Weight: 1000 lbs
Designer: Jac Ouellette of AnvilJac Studios (http://www.anviljac.com)
Production: Jac Ouellette, Betsy Dawkins
Materials: aluminum (cup and coffee cherry), steel (arm, coffee beans and tower)
The design process
Well over a year ago, Ouellette listened to Lindemann and Spear’s vision and used simple line drawings to begin the design process. With the designs approved, Ouellette created mockups of the sculpture to study the kinetic nature of the piece. After many rounds, a final design was chosen and the full size sculpture began to come together.

“It’s incredible to finally see the sculpture where it was designed to stand,” noted Spear, who has worked closely with the structural engineer and construction company throughout the process. “This project was a true collaboration between so many people who turned our dream into a reality.”

The CBD roastery and coffee bar is in the East Bayside neighborhood of Portland, about two miles from the original CBD on Congress Street. The concept for One Diamond Street has been to deliver an environment where customers can immerse themselves in the CBD coffee experience. Since 1994, that experience has involved coffee as well as community. “Everything we do is about our love for coffee, our coffee farmers and their families, local artists and organizations and most of all, our customers. Jac’s sculpture is the next step for Coffee By Design,” says Lindemann.
