Lantmännen Unibake Announces Sustainability Initiatives’ Progress, Including Reaching 2020 Goals Early and Joining Earth Statement
LISLE, Ill. (Dec. 1, 2015) — To mark more than 20 years of business in the U.S., Lantmännen Unibake announces progress on its global long-term sustainability initiatives such as meeting its 2020 carbon footprint goal six years early and joining Earth Statement.
In 2009, Lantmännen Unibake made the commitment to reduce carbon dioxide emissions from daily business by 33 percent in 2020. By the end of 2014, the company exceeded this goal by reducing the group’s carbon footprint by 40 percent, six years ahead of schedule. In addition to reaching its carbon goal, Lantmännen has joined Earth Statement, an initiative to support a global climate agreement at the 2015 U.N. Climate Change Conference in Paris.
“Joining Earth Statement is an important initiative to create positive changes for climate and environmental issues,” says Lantmännen President and CEO Per Olof Nyman. “For Lantmännen, sustainability is a key part of our strategy and global business operations, and we notice an increasing will from consumers and customers to pay for products that take climate change into account.”
In keeping with the company’s responsible business policy, Lantmännen also joined the Roundtable of Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO) in 2010 to help fight deforestation. This year, the company has taken this commitment to the next step by making the transition to 100 percent sustainable palm oil by January 2016.
“We believe that 25-30 percent of climate change is derived from the food chain, and it’s our responsibility to provide our customers with sustainable solutions,” says Scott Rosenberg, director of marketing and customer service for Lantmännen Unibake USA. “In the end, it’s all about ethically sourcing world-class raw materials and transforming them into superior baked goods in a way that leaves the world a little better than we found it.”
Beyond its own company goals, Lantmännen Unibake has created a Code of Conduct for all of its suppliers to ensure the highest standards of food safety. This sets clear requirements in regards to environment, health, safety, social conditions and business ethics. All products are prepared under full Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points, or HACCP, and are fully compliant with Global Food Safety Initiatives, or GFSI.
