Community Coffee Company and Southwest Airlines Help Open Schools in Coffee Farming Communities

devin-pence-ccc-mexico-studentsBaton Rouge, LA, December 2016 – Community Coffee Company recently traveled to the villages of Tierra y Libertad and Buena Vista in Chiapas, Mexico, where the company purchases some of its coffee, to support the opening of two schools funded in partnership with Southwest Airlines Co. and the ECOM Foundation.

With the help of the ECOM Foundation, Community Coffee and Southwest had the opportunity to help open two schools this fall. These schools allow the children of the farming families to receive a quality education right in their own community.

The isolation of the villages of Tierra y Libertad and Buena Vista in Mexico makes it difficult for teachers to reach the area. In response to this problem, two classrooms with satellite internet were constructed with access to an online curriculum. The project provides grade-school education, as well as access to agricultural, technological and academic training for anyone interested. Additionally, residents can now access a university education remotely.

“Community Coffee is committed to giving back to the farmers –and their families – who provide the high-quality coffee beans we use in our premium coffees,” said David Belanger, president and CEO of Community Coffee Company. “We work with our farmers to ensure that funding stays where it’s needed in the local community, whether that’s through building schools and medical facilities or providing job training and safety equipment.”

Southwest Airlines shares that same vision of giving back. In fact, on all Southwest flights starting last March, for every cup of Community® coffee enjoyed, Southwest and Community Coffee fund educational programs to support the children, families and farmers in Mexico where Community’s high quality Arabica coffee is grown.

This program is facilitated through the ECOM Foundation. ECOM is the world’s largest commodities distributor, and its foundation was created to support farming communities.
